Dudowolf makes my day

Monday, November 28th, 2005

Been busy keeping up with all the buzz on the net linking to 23 - and making sure that our additional batch of servers gets online asap.
Then i found this gem in chinese as the tags for a 23 bookmark on del.icio.us (one of the more wild taggings i’ve ever seen, btw).

“23: I don’t have any memory of this site, but apparently when I accessed it for the first time, I was apparently already logged in as duduwolf. I seem to be registering myself to too many sites every day; my eyes can’t cope and my brain can’t either ;)”

Dudowolf - you’ve made my day.

Just hope this time around that 23 will make a greater impression on you ;)

Why we’re slow this (European) morning

Sunday, November 27th, 2005

It’s certainly nice to be noticed, and we have been with MetaFilter spawning a discussion about 23 a few hours ago.

However, the postive attention comes at a time when we’ve reached the limit of our current server setup, so 23 is not a cosily fast as it could have been. Anyway, we thought a bit of openness and a status report was in order: The new servers have arrived, but we’re still waiting for the hard drives. In short, it’ll be only a few more days before we can guarantee you a perfectly crisp 23 experience again!

Update: The additional servers are coming along fine - but we apologize for the lackluster performance our american and asian users are having during their daytime.

Update: All the hardware for the servers has arrived and been installed. Thomas and Guan will fly down to Amsterdam with them on Sunday, and there will probably be a maintenance period Monday night where the new servers will be added to the 23 cluster.

Update: The new servers are up now and we’re in the process of copying over the hundreds and hundreds of gigabytes of photos that 23 users have uploaded. When that’s almost done, properly Monday afternoon European time, we’ll announce a maintenance period and take the service down for 4 to 5 hours.

Help translating 23

Friday, November 11th, 2005

One of our favorite features at 23 is our multi-lingual support; that is the site has been created so it’s very easy to integrate more languages. And, while our focus has been on adding more features rather than adding more languages, users have been offering to help translating. After much discussion, we’ve agreed to give them the chance…

If you want to lend a hand, let us know by replying to this thread in our discussion forums.

The (first annual?) Noodlum Christmas Prize

Friday, November 11th, 2005

Nick Muldoon has initiated a sort of Christmas Photo Challenge in which you can win the greatest price of all! No, it’s not eternal happyness, world peace or even some kind of fancy car; it’s a one-year subscription to 23!

To be a contender, you’ll need to shoot a brilliant photo, upload it to 23 and tag it noodlumchristmasprize. To see current entries, have a look at http://www.23hq.com/tag/noodlumchristmasprize

(And on a personal note, we here a 23 salute the effort — we urge Nick to make The Challenge annual, as this will at least provide us with some steady income :-)…)

Scary when the real world looks like the twilight zone. The guy’s only job was to greet people arriving to the hotel - in his spare time he designed high street fashion clothing for women

Subscribe to tags

Tuesday, November 1st, 2005

We’ve just done an upgrade of 23, but since we’re continually making minor updates, I’m not able to give you a full list of new additions since last. Today’s update is mostly a minor design and functionality fix before gearing up to revise the entire set of “Sharing” features.

However, this recent update does include one distinct new feature: Tag subscriptions. You’ll now be able to see all new photos tagged london in your Subscription — this is done by clicking the Subscribe link when visiting af given tag. New photos tagged london will appear alongside new photos from your contacts.
(And no, the service isn’t restricted to the the london tag specifically — in fact you can use it for any tag that you find interesting.)

What’s up next then? We hope to make our users able to subscribe to our Plus service sometime tomorrow; we’ve been discussing new features in Sharing; and we are getting very serious about our own Windows upload application. And then there’s all the other stuff at the top of our lists: blog auto-detection, RSS feeds on subscriptions, and much more…
